Social misfits

  1. It was interesting to see that in Hollywood it does seem that people who wear glasses are more likley to be portrayed as being socially awkward or the "social misfits." While I was watching this I was thinking about other characters portrayed in this way such as Milton from "Office Space" and Tula from "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" before her "makeover." People in Hollywood seem to only be socially accepted or not awkward after they get rid of the glasses and become "normal." I, like most people who wear glasses, am a bit offended by this-as I think glasses do not automatically make you a "socially awkward" person. But I have seen it so much in Hollywood that I suppose I've put on blinders to what it's really saying about our society.

  2. That is an interesting post. I never really saw people who wore glasses as social misfits. The only stereotype of people that wore glasses that I ever heard of was that they are smart. People that wear glasses just appear that they are intelligent. However, I know plenty of people who wear glasses, but are still not very smart. I also know plenty of people who wear glasses that are very down-to-earth and normal. These stereotypes do not always hold to much truth.
